Kayleen Grows In Brooklyn

After the Fall: A Rough and Tumble Tale

In the winter, I am bad at some things. (Everyone say it together now: “Like blogging.”) The other night my problem was walking. I fell down on some ice, and even though I was wearing my pre-frayed jeans that have a hole in the knee, I managed to rip open a spot right above this hole. So now my jeans have two holes and a bloodstain. Who says I can’t break in my own clothes? When I got home, I was bummed because I messed up my jeans and because it will not stop snowing in this city (Something to say to strangers: Did you know that in New York, with two more months of winter to go, this season’s snowfall already ranks sixth on the all-time list?) So I showed Justin my wound from the mean streets. He was very sympathetic. He told me not to bleed on anything. But he did make me a nightcap. And then I remembered that there was something in the freezer that would make me feel a lot better: My advent calendar. Justin bought me the chocolate countdown to Christmas in November this year (because he was afraid Trader Joe’s would sell out!) and I had to look at it for like three weeks before I could open it. I have strict rules about theme candy. Ask my brother, who I never allowed to eat any Junior Mints at the movies until after the previews started. I’m such a cool sister. By December 1, when I could open the calendar, all of the chocolate inside it had melted because the heat in our apartment is set at “A Time To Kill.” So I had to keep it in the freezer, where I kept forgetting about it. But on January 27, I finished it.

You’re impressed.
