The Me Decade
Ten years ago on Halloween, I got my first job offer. It was to be an editorial assistant at Footwear News. I was thrilled, a reaction possibly intensified because when I got the call I was babysitting. As a fun activity, the mom asked me to take the kid to the children’s Halloween parade in Washington Square Park, where I had to carry her around in circles while like five people and homeless guys cheered us on. I think she was dressed as a bumblebee. The only good thing was that we got free Shrek ears for participating. I got my job offer in the middle of this, returned the kid, but kept the ears—and called Matthew to celebrate. We watched the adult parade for a bit—my Shrek ears were a hit—and then went to get Chinese takeout from Suzie’s, which we ate in his NYU dorm room. At the time I thought it was the best night, but in retrospect, maybe we weren’t the coolest. Anyway, it’s ten years later, Halloween again, and I got a Talk of The Town piece published in The New Yorker today. No, it didn’t take ten years to write. I just like the symmetry. I’m kind of hoping to get dumplings tonight too. And end up in a dorm room.
